Spot Painting, 1986

I was always a colorist, I’ve always had a phenomenal love of color… I mean, I just move color around on its own. So that’s where the spot paintings came from—to create that structure to do those colors, and do nothing. I suddenly got what I wanted. It was just a way of pinning down the joy of color.  —Damien Hirst

Today initiates the Gagosian Gallery’s worldwide exhibition of  Twenty Five years of Spot Paintings by Damien Hirst. Sharing over 300 paintings, including his first from 1986, the exhibition presents his work at the 11 Gagosian locations worldwide. If you’re in New York you’ll be checking out his works at the 980 Madison Ave., 555 W.24th st., & 522 W.21st locations this week. I know I will be, when it comes to Damien Hirst’s Spot paintings, I really enjoy the concentration on color and the emphasis on simplicity. Both of which can also be said for spring trends, as well as polka dots and spots of all sorts. After making their marks in both womens and menswear in the past few seasons, ss12 presentations don’t fall short of the trend. Here’s a compilation of spotty images I’m inspired by right now.
