Its funny that I have all these inspirational quotes around me that I never intentionally tried to create one of my own that could inspire others. I was chatting with Ronnie on day, I believe, and I jokingly said this to him as we were catching up on how work was going, new projects coming up, etc. etc. It was said in such a calm manner that I don’t even believe he caught on to it. However, a few minutes after I said it, it was like the quote smacked me in the face and told me I said something powerful. So immediately as Ronnie and I were still chatting, I was Googling my new quote to see if it had ever been said by anyone in any way even remotely close to it. Luckily for me, I still haven’t found a philosopher nor artist that has said this and quoted it. So this is my stamp on making it officially a MAS Quote… I made it into art.

*This has already made it to people’s background screens and my own. Im thinking about making prints of this…hmmm*

In light of the 2012 Olympics and paying homage to some of the greatest basketball players in NBA history. Olympic sneaker art had to be made MAS style!!

Been obsessively listening to a new CD this past week or so and only a select few artists can keep my attention for so long. When it comes to music, I can be very picky to what I listen to depending on my mood, state of living im in, what im doing, etc etc. Not to mention I have a short attention span for albums which it makes it harder for me to stay committed to an artist. However, every so often an artist comes along with an album or “mixtape”, ode to The Weeknd, that has me obsessively listening to them, analyzing every track, associating their lyrics with my life, and grabbing inspiration from them. Ever since, Nostalgia ULTRA I have been hooked to Frank Ocean’s music. A year and some change later finally his official album drops! Hypetrak does an amazing job reviewing this incredible album so I had to share it.

“Every now and then, an artist emerges within the music sphere who pushes the boundaries, someone whose music matches the tastes of critics, underground fans, and mainstream alike.
With the arrival of his first official studio album channel ORANGE, Frank Ocean is the man of the moment. From writing for artists like John Legend, Beyoncé, and Justin Bieber, to his excellent mixtape nostalgia.ULTRA and collaborations with Jay-Z and Kanye West, the Odd Future singer has come full circle with his artistry through this full-length release.

What makes channel ORANGE an exceptional body of work is the the melodious melange of multiple genres like contemporary R&B, gospel, blues, jazz, electro, and eccentric alternative elements and the sincere quality of its content, thus providing the album with the potential to become timeless. This becomes apparent from the very start, as the album opener, “Thinkin’ Bout You,” indicates. Having been available for more than one year, the song has lost nothing of the energy that helped to reinforce Ocean’s steadily increasing buzz within the industry. This further becomes visible with songs like “Pyramids,” an extensive, tempo-shifting narrative, as well as “White,” which is powered by a one-minute John Mayer guitar solo. Tracks like the funk-infused “Monks” and the dreamy tune “Pilot Jones” also indicate Ocean’s aptitude to bend different styles and influences. Besides drawing from various genres, the album also beautifully aligns a variety of emotions with tones and a multitude of vibes, as can be heard on the Pharrell Williams standout track,”Sweet Life,”. It captures the essence of a blissful summer jam but also stresses the uncertainty of one’s financial status. Another highlight of the record, the Earl Sweatshirt-assisted “Super Rich Kids,” offers a catchy and nostalgic account of a spoiled child’s dysfunctional, pampered life, which is backed up by a dramatic, single chord piano stomp.

What further carries this piece is Ocean’s honesty, merged with his profound song-writing abilities. The Andre 3000-featured “Pink Matters” is a lyrical manifesto which fuses a hazy guitar with captivating storytelling. While Three Stacks convinces the listener with his signature flow and thought-provoking lyrics, Ocean presents himself emotionally and sonically naked, offering access to his true feelings and admitting to being torn between his doubts and demons. Another example of how narrative and melody can function together comes in the form of “Crack Rock”, which is a melancholy tale of drug addiction containing an abstract analysis of the hardships of a crack addict. The emotional ride continues with “Bad Religion” and “Forrest Gump.” While Ocean experiences the ups and downs of affection in the former, the latter proves to be the album’s organ-driven emotional center, where he contemplates religion during a cab drive.

Frank Ocean never loses his emotive voice throughout the whole album. While always swaying between various stages of emotions, he retains the core authenticity of his music, which is situated between sensuality and perception, thus managing to commodify vulnerability and honesty. With shifting synths and pulses of sound fused with minimalist, mid-tempo drum patterns and Ocean’s soulfully intimate voice,channel ORANGE, which has landed at No. 2 on the prestigious Billboard Top 200 albums, is not only your average chart-conquering record, but a meditative voyage through Ocean’s inner thoughts and is direct reflection of his personality.” -Hypetrak

The U.S.A Basketball team which competed in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics remains one of the strongest teams ever assembled in any sport. Known as the Dream Team, its roster featured the likes of Scottie Pippen, Magic Johnson and the legendary Michael Jordan. The team became a worldwide sensation, winning every game they played and dominating the competition.

Just in time for the Summer Olympics events and anniversary of the NBA USA Dream Team, Nike comes correct with their new installment to their Destroyer Jacket line.  Created to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Dream Team’s gold medal win, this limited edition NSW Destroyer Jacket entails so much detailing. The jacket features a range of patches and embroidery, quotes, referencing player numbers, winning scores and more. Nike definitely did some work on this and it shows remarkably. If you’re not feeling the navy/ white (which would be absurd) it also comes in all black with gold detailing. There’s also a video below of the homie Stalley in the new jacket, but it doesnt really give off a great viewing of the jacket. However, it’s got some great animation and still a dope video!

Yes I know right, the title is odd. However, its kind of an interesting method especially for an art connoisseur.

The Clarion Hotel in Sweden have announced that they will now be accepting artwork as payment for staying in one of their rooms. Their inspiration comes from the now closed Chelsea Hotel in New York, who had a similar agreement with well-known guests.

Speaking about the new payment system, the marketing manager Tess Mattisson said “It all started with the fact that our general manager’s grandfather was an artist… He actually had some of his work hanging in the Chelsea Hotel, and now that their hotel has closed down, the manager was so inspired that our hotel will continue the tradition.”

There is a catch however – you are only able to stay for two nights a year under this arrangement. (via Slamxhype)

The one thing I wonder is, what constitutes acceptability of artwork payment? Like what is considered acceptable to grant you a stay at this hotel. Could someone just makes some scribbles and walk up like, “Here’s my art. Where’s my room key?” Hmmm
